When The Tower Centre was built nearly fifty years ago the views of local residents were almost completely ignored, so
we believe that the following criteria should be adopted in the new Hoddesdon Town Plan to shape the type of scheme
which may eventually replace it.
- A low rise, high density, mixed use development (similar to Fawkon Walk) which is in proportion to the current
scale of the rest of the buildings in the town centre, and sympathetically and imaginatively designed.
- Provide a mix of dwelling sizes and types with the majority of tenures being affordable housing to replace
those lost by the demolition of the existing flats in the centre. Replacement housing for those displaced by the
development must obviously be provided.
- Contain a variety of medium and small retail units designed to attract independent and niche comparison retailers
as well as national chains.
- Incorporate leisure facilities such as a hotel, a gym, children's soft play centre, plus community facilities
such as an Information Advice and Guidance Centre for Herts Regional College.
- Make specific provision for open spaces for plants, trees and other greenery to grow naturally.
- The scale and nature of any development will be sustainable and not have adverse impacts on the local transport
infrastructure and environment and make use of the latest recycling techniques, as well as using environmentally
friendly building materials and renewable energy sources.
