Over the last forty years there have been five major developments which have contributed to the complete transformation of the town.

1967 The Tower Centre is completed, consisting of a shopping precinct, basement car park for 100 cars, a bowling alley, offices and a high rise block of 54 flats. A significant number of historic buildings, including one of the oldest buildings in the town: the Maidenhead Inn, are demolished to make way for the development. 1968 On the west side of the High Street the Fawkon Walk shopping mall is opened, consisting of a number of small shops units leading to a larger Sainsburys Supermarket.
1970 The town bypass opens to take traffic to the north and east of the High Street via the Dinant Link Road and Charlton Way.
1991 - 1997 In the teeth of massive opposition from residents and traders, Broxbourne Council imposes the pedestrianisation of the north end of the High Street and its subsequent closure to through traffic in three phases. This involves the building of service roads to the east and west of the High Street and the introduction of a complicated and confusing one way traffic system.
2002 After a public enquiry Sainsburys build a new supermarket with over 400 parking spaces and a petrol station off Brewery Road. In 2005 they added a large extension to the store and built an upper storey to part of the car park.
